Loch Etive

We headed up to Loch Etive to fish our club match. There were a few delays on the way up with road work's going on. Finally arrived and the wind had picked up a bit but was to die down later on. A few guy's I had talked too were fishing for Pollack but had no success due to the fresh water in the loch.

We headed to our fishing place and started the match. The first few hours the spurs were about.

Then the rain started around 6pm and did not let up till the end of the match at 10pm. There was still a few spurs around but the main stay were whitting codling doggies and thornies.

Results were
Shane 1st with 15 fish for 613pts
Mark 2nd with 14 fish for 449pts
Frank 3rd with 9 fish for 381pts
Stewart 4th with 9 fish for 350pts
John 5th with 2 fish for 115pts

Well done guys for staying the course in the wet conditions and getting home safely with the road conditions and detours.

club shore match

Fished the club shore match last week. One of the better matches as the fish decided to play.
Species we were after was bass smooth hounds and tope.
The smoothies made  an appearance but the bass and tope decided to stay away.

Sanny with the first smoothie and ended up with 15 fish and winning the match.

Myself with a smoothie of 91cms giving me the longest fish for about half an hour and ended up with 6 fish to come 2nd.

Frank with his first smoothie they do get bigger Frank.

Shane with his only smoothie at 96cms which gave him the longest fish and came in 3rd.
Shane also holds the longest fish for the year in a club match nice one.

Arbroath Cod Fishing

The first shore match in the club calendar for 2014 was fished at Arbroath on Saturday 8th February. 5 members fished the event, including John, Shane & Nico Wilson, Robert Edmond and Jamie Soons. Fishing a flooding tide with the match being fished 3pm till 10pm.

Upon arrival to Ballies, for the regsitration, the sea looked pretty damn spot on, nice rollers and plenty of white water, so my expectations were high for decent numbers of fish.

We all opted to fish off the beach around the Ballies area. There was a fair bit of weed / kelp littering the beach but I was hopeful that this wouldn't interfere too much with the fishing. The match started off with not much action and the tide seemed like ages before it eventually started to flood the beach. I was aware that Nico had managed a fish further along so was ever hopeful that the fishing would pick up.

About halfway through the match the weed got pretty much a major problem for me with every cast dragging my line and rod towards the water, after a couple of tackle losses I opted a move! - Robert, fishing just round from me, managed to escape the cauldron of weed I was in and managed a fish.

I was amazed to see no one else on the beach as I thought these conditions were Ideal. I sent out a lug, mussel& crab bait. It wasn't long before my rod tip was pounding over, picked up the rod and felt a couple of good slams, struck and first fish was on it's way in. Nice plump cod around the 5lb mark. Re-clipped and sent another trace out. Again it wasn't long before I was into another fish. with around 5 minutes to go before the end of the match I received my final bite and brought in my biggest fish of the night, 6lb 5oz, I was amazed to see an octopus hanging out of its mouth when I brought it up - thought about using it for bait, but returned it.

Back to the weighing
Upon arrival I wondered how the fishing had went after I left, Robert had 3 fish and Shane & Nico had a fish each, John failed to catch... better luck next time mate!

Match Results as follows...

1st J Soons — 3 fish for 15lb 5ozs
2nd R. Edmund — 3 fish for 9lb 13ozs
3rd S. Wilson — 1 fish for 4lb 10ozs
4th N. Wilson — 1 fish for 1lb 8ozs

Heaviest fish — R. Edmunds fish of 5lb 12ozs

Shore and Boat match

In the last couple of weeks I have been out to our last boat match at loch Etive. We had hired the charter boat to fish the match. As always the skipper was first class. He kept the tea and coffee coming and us on the fish. It was good to see one of our junior anglers getting her first spur. Well done Victoria..

Also attended the last shore match which was held at Arbroath. Some nice fish were caught.

Port Patrick

We had a match down at Port Patrick. The sun was shining down and the sea looked good.
We all headed for our chosen marks. First time fishing this area and it amazed me the amount of rip pull there was in the water. All the other guys had the same problem as I found out later on.

There was a few different species caught and a big bull seal decided to see what was about. A few dolphins also made a show. Fishing during the day was a bit slow till the light went down. I am convinced this mark is a night venue.

At the end of the match there was flounder, plaice, dabs, coalies, tub and grey gurnards, launce, and the old doggies. Some nice edible crabs were caught too.

Loch Fine

Fished loch Fine with 8 other members. Fishing was hard going for this time of year.
Most of us managed to connect with a fish. Darren got the best fish of the day a small thornback ray.

I think most of us were happy to see the old doggie about to take the blank off.
